Insulated Work Platform
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE IWP
Does this jib have to be stored permanently on the side of the crane?
No, it does not. Some of our customers store it on a trailer. Other customers prefer to store the jib along the side of the crane, on the deck, whether it is a chassis or crawler mounted vehicle.
On what size cranes are the IWP’s installed?
Every application is evaluated to insure the crane has sufficient capacity and stability, as well as review the load monitoring system.
Typically the larger chassis mounted cranes are used. The truck mounted and RT cranes such as Grove, Link Belt, Terex, etc. can also be utilized.

Why should I replace my platform controls?
The standard crane basket controls were not designed for EHV applications and have not been tested for bonding on to energized lines.
We install a complete control system with a new valve that permits operation of multiple functions and limits the speed of the crane functions from the platform controls.
The controls system is designed specifically for aerial work platform applications.
Can the Insulated Work Platform be used with more than one crane?
Yes. However, the IWP must be qualified on each crane that it will be installed on. This would involve load testing and dielectric testing on each crane.
How do you protect the fiberglass and the other critical components like the corona ring and test bands while transporting the jib?
Typically, the jib will remain stowed on the base boom of the crane. It may also be transported on a trailer. In all cases, the corona ring has a guard to protect the sharp edge and the entire jib assembly has a vinyl cover. An additional hard shell cover may be necessary depending on the situation.
If the corona ring is damaged, do I have to requalify the jib?
A unit must be requalified anytime a component like the corona ring, which provides dielectric integrity, is removed from the jib.
Can just the IWP be qualified separately from the crane?
No. The entire crane must be tested in the condition it will be utilized in the field.
Can I sell the IWP when we retire the crane?
We do not recommend that you sell the IWP. We recommend that you transfer it to another unit in the fleet or install it on the new crane.
Diversified is available to help review the crane specifications and to transfer the IWP.
Our company is not doing bare hand work today. Can we perform bare hand work after installing and testing the IWP on our crane?
The IWP and crane are just a small part of what is required to do barehand work. A great deal of training is required and work practices must be developed. Diversified Product Development is not qualified to provide bare hand training at this time. Contact us for names of companies that are qualified to provide the training.
Do we have to take our crane to Diversified to install the IWP?
We have trained personnel to install the IWP at our factory or at your location. It is more typical to install the IWP at your facility on existing units in your fleet. A new crane just going into service is more likely to be shipped to our factory for the installation.
Where can the finished unit be tested after the installation is complete?
There are a number of testing facilities around the country: AEP in Ohio, A.B. Chance in Missouri, Bonneville in the Northwest. Contact Diversified for an up to date list of testing facilities.
How do I maintain and troubleshoot the control system?
Training is provided at your location or at the factory. Also manuals, schematics and diagrams are provided with each unit. Technical phone support is available.
What is the IWP length?
The clear span fiberglass for insulating is 13 ft. The overall jib length is 19ft. and the increase in platform height versus a platform on a crane tip is approximately 22 ft.
What can I control from the platform?
From the platform the operator can control the boom, telescope and swing functions, engine start/stop, emergency stop, two speed, engine RPM and horn.
What platforms are available?
- Two man 600 lb. Rated work load 36” x 72” Steel
- Two man 600 lb. Rated work load 36” x 72” Aluminum w/fold down rails
- One man 400 lb. Rated work load 30: x 36” Steel
We are interested in a Category “B or C” IWP. Are they available?
The “Category A” model was introduced first because it is the most complex. Category B & C are available as well as fiberglass buckets.
What is ANSI A92.2?
This standard relates to the design, manufacture and use of truck mounted aerial devices. Portions of this standard apply to insulated units. The bucket trucks in most utility company fleets meet A92.2.
